Thanks to Trev and Speed Theory for a weekend of racing down in Calgary!
Cory picked me up early on Saturday morning as we didn’t start until after noon. It was an uneventful trip and we got set up ready for the time trial. The course was pretty gritty, but really fast. Bruce put down a smokin’ time averaging over 48km/h! I even had a decent ride to finish 8th with a 48:15.
After getting my SRM changed over I was able to take a nice nap before my crit. I wasn’t super excited for an interesting course and a small field. But once we got going it was pretty good. I was able to work hard and still feel good.
I had a decent sleep and was ready for the road race. It was an interesting race to say the least. The field sat around as we watched Dallas, Gideon, and Brennan ride away. For the last lap and a half we rotated through and then set up the sprint. I was able to hold on for 7th, putting me in 6th overall in the omnium.
Good weekend. Thanks guys!

cyclocross training poster
It’s real and it’s spectacular!
Come out, learn some skills, practice some technique, and do some interval work. After all, in the words of Mr. Dynamite, “Girls only like guys with skills!”
We’ll start the first week of September on Thursday night and run until the Thursday before Nationals, October 7. We’ll meet in the field by the Argyll Velodrome at 6:30 pm. We’ll practice some skills and do some training for about 2 hours each night.
Cyclocross is a very technical and demanding sport and the practice we’ll do will surely help you out this year.
Please reserve your spot as I am trying to keep it small and intimate to give each of you the attention you deserve. Plus the first 3 people signed up will receive a Cycle-smart Solutions for Cyclocross DVD. Hammer Nutrition and United Cycle have also stepped up as sponsors and we will have different awards throughout the clinics.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. And pass on the information to anybody you think might be interested. Should be good times!

I took my cyclocross bike out for it’s first real of the year yesterday. And a real cross ride it was! I managed to get rained on twice and a little muddy!
Today was a good ride doing some thresholds out by the velodrome getting ready for nationals.
It’s coming…

Peter, my dad, and I woke up early this morning to head down to Calgary to race the provincial championships.
We hit the road in cool temperatures, but didn’t really get rained on at all. It was a tough race today. I was feeling the effects of the last week and didn’t have really high expectations. But the real racing had barely gotten underway when I got popped the first time up the climb. I was trying to sag climb, but got gapped and couldn’t close it back up. I chased and chased and chased. I was working well with Shawn Taylor and we would get within 200m only for the race in front to accelerate.
Eventually, I just couldn’t do it. I wanted to quit so bad, but I told myself you’re not racing, you’re training. It ALL counts! So I finished it out as hard as I could.
The race in front looked and sounded really tough. Robin Baillie pulled out the win! I’m really happy for him. He totally deserves it. A guy who works hard, has a job. It reminded me of when Jesse won a few years ago.
But don’t worry, cyclocross is coming!!
Look for details on my upcoming Thursday night cyclocross techniques, tactics, and training.

I had a great ride today after work. I could see rain all over the place, but it never hit me. I stayed dry and warm!
But I barely got caught up on life before I go back into training mode. I’ll see if I can come up for air every once in a while!
Keep checking back as there are some interesting things coming on the horizon…

I have to say that riding around in the last couple weeks in the beautiful warm sunshine that I haven’t really been looking forward to cyclocross. The idea of putting on lots of clothes and suffering through the rain didn’t seem to appealing…
But I was riding out to Bearspaw for the Bowness circuit race in the cold, wearing all kinds of clothes, I was still having a blast! I think that maybe I am ready for cyclocross!
Now I just need the money to get to the races…
But I had a pretty good weekend in Calgary at the Tour of Bowness. It topped off a great block of training. I was a little tired, but I still put down a new best time in the hill climb. I suffered a lot in the crit and the circuit race. I really thought I was popped about 17 times over the two days! But it was good and fun! Thanks guys!
