A world made for us

Andy and I were talking about diet on our ride yesterday.  We were just talking about the importance of real food and a balanced diet, rather than all this fake scientific replacement stuff.

Nutritionists have good ideas.  But that doesn’t mean they always work.  I mean, communism works in theory…  Look at trans fats; that was a good idea gone bad.

Maybe the reason that real food is so good for us is because everything has the perfect combination of nutrients.  Maybe there are things in real food that we don’t yet know about that make them good or make the nutrients work better.

It just amazes me, yet again, that God created this world for us.  He made it so that we could function well and be at our best!  Thank God for that!

Just as I thought…

Just last week, Starbucks bought the Clover coffee company.  It’s a pretty huge deal in the coffee industry.  Ever since it happened we’ve been talking about with everybody that comes into Transcend.  It’s crazy.  Nobody really knows exactly what’s going to happen with it all right now.

But here are some thoughts from the New York Times.  And here are some from the man, Poul, at Transcend.

You can have the best of best, and not be the best.  I can have the most beautiful 6.8kg bike, but that doesn’t mean I’ll beat the likes of Cancellara…  So Starbucks can have the greatest coffee maker ever and still not have the best coffee!

I was also discussing this week whether any Starbucks staff know of their new recent acquisition.  I wonder if I went back into Westgate, if they would know of this event…  Half of the staff don’t even like coffee…

Whatever you do, smile and enjoy coffee!

Tough ride

I took my mom out on her first ride with her new bike today.  It was pretty fun.  Weimg_6266.jpg rolled down Saskatchewan Drive and back home through Belgravia.  I was very impressed with her skills…  And the 10k that we did wasn’t bad, especially considering that she thought 5k yesterday was going to be enough.

I spent a whopping 2 minutes over 330W today…

I figure I’m doing good since Will Frischkorn said he only spent 4+ hours between 330 and 450W on Saturday in Milan-San Remo, while being in a break for 5.5 hours and over 200k.  Eeeshk!!!

img_6253.jpg…pounds of sweetness!  I took my new Kona out on it’s first rides this weekend.  It’s pretty nice.  Stiff and light, smooth.  It’s good.

img_6263.jpgI had to play with my position for the first little while and I think I’m going to need to get a super-ridiculo-drop stem to get the position I want.

img_6252.jpgAnd my mom also got a new bike!  I think it’s been 15 years or something since that’s happened!  She’s going to do the MS150 this year.  I’m super excited.  I think we might take on a ride tomorrow…

I also decided today that cyclists are a weird bunch.  I mean, what did we do today???  We went to church, went for a ride, now I’m writing this and am going to be too tired to do a whole lot else tonight.  Man!  Weird!

I thought should throw in that I’ve been honked at and yelled at 3 times this week!  What the heck is wrong with people?!?!?  I mean, I’m not a jerk, but I do own my space.  I’ll let you do what you need to do.  Just do the same for me…

Cross on the road?!?!

I was going to write a post after last Sunday about how I made the mistake of coming through the west end of the city.  I rode through a whole bunch of snow and slush and dirt.  Man, it was bad.  But it was awesome!

I felt like I was back in Europe racing cross through the mud and sand!  Woohoo!

But then I was doing the same thing yesterday down the alley.  Then I slipped and my wheel hit the neighbour’s rock.  My wheel immediately went flat and I hit the telephone pole.  Oops!

I went to fix my tyre before my ride today and this is what I found…

Dang!  That was a brand new tyre…

Ferrari

Mark Jung is the man!

Lorne had to cancel my massage appointment because his holiday changed.  No big deal.  But it did worry me since I was already really worried about this sciatica-like pain that I’ve been getting.  It started last weekend and manifested itself with a huge power deficit on Thursday.  Laura (my sports injuries/physiology go-to, thanks Laura!) described her experience with sciatica and I figured that’s what I had.

But when I tried to reschedule with Lorne and couldn’t, Mark stepped up and fixed me good.  He figures I don’t have sciatica.  But he figures a leg-length discrepancy, horribly pronated feet, ridiculously tight hamstrings, and pain caused by all those things…

I function well day-to-day.  But I’m not your average person’s Honda Civic, I’m an athlete’s Ferrari that needs everything topped up and tuned to perfection all the time.

Thanks Mark!

Driving

I was recently driving home from Brittani’s house.  There wasn’t a lot of traffic on the roads.  I was thinking, if only people knew how to drive really well and we didn’t need speed limits and 4-way stops and everybody could just be reasonable.

It made me think back to Europe where people seem to just flow.  If there’s a gap, take it, but if there’s not, don’t force your way in.  Everybody is on the same aggression level.  There aren’t people that are over-timid and then people react by being over-aggressive.

I think we could use more stringent rules and driver testing.  People just need to realize that other people are trying to do the same thing as them and let them do that.  If only…

Whyte Ave

When I was told that my jeans had a hole in them, I figured it was time to go shopping…

Mike and I wandered down Whyte Ave today. I hadn’t really ever shopped there before… I wouldn’t know where to go or how to shop. It’s just very different. But I did get a really refreshing feeling from all the employees. They seem very real.

I’ve spent a decent chunk of time on the other side of the counter (something I think everybody should experience at some point in at least some form…) so I like to think I can relate. So as a customer, I do my best to make their job easy and to make their day enjoyable.

We are also in the middle of an employment crisis, with all kinds of businesses, everywhere, putting up “Help Wanted” signs on their doors. So to find helpful, smiling employees at a job that is enough work and probably not enough pay, is very refreshing! They don’t afraid to take a break when there’s no work, but when somebody comes in they’ll happily greet you and give you a hand when needed.

Just real people helping you out…

Gorgeous

Absolutely gorgeous!

The weather has been amazing.  I’ve absolutely enjoyed riding the last couple days.  I was a little worried with the snow on Wednesday night, but it turned out to be ok.

And I love my SRM!  I actually don’t think I can remember the last time I had as much fun riding a long tempo set.  Wow!

See you on the roads…

Square one

Chad has decided to come help us out at Transcend.  He’s learning about roasting and we’re learning about espresso.  It’s tough getting back into it, especially with all the changes.  But things are looking good.

Chad is upping the standards.  It’s good.  I’m enjoying learning again.  But it’s definitely hard starting back at the beginning.  I realized I’ve been at Transcend for almost a year, and I’m starting right back there now.

But it’s good.  So come on in and enjoy a delicious and transcendent espresso!
