Show me the money!

I think I’m in love with lining up some classic movie quotes with my current thoughts…

I was bored, looking through my phone, and I found a recording I made of my dad when we were driving a few weeks ago.  We had had some salary, job, volunteering, money conversations.  In light of those, this is what he said:

Would I do my job for less money?

  • Yeah.

Would I do my job for more money?

  • Well, yeah.

Do I need more money for my job?

  • No.

Would I go on strike to make more money?

  • No.

Do I expect more money for my job?

  • No.

People should do their jobs because they love the job or love the work.

Thanks Dad.

In light of my many thoughts on money and jobs and pay and what is fair, I think this is fitting.  There are many more thoughts in my head, that will hopefully reach you soon.  Do you have anything to add?

Merry Christmas

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.  All things came into being through him and, and without him not one thing came into being.

Don’t believe the lies of this world.

You are loved!

Where you’ve been doesn’t need to be the same as where you’re going.

What you’ve done doesn’t change the love you deserve.

Merry Christmas!

Be good.

If you could do it over again

Would you do the same thing?

Would you do it the same way?

Do you have any regrets?

I think I get it

We’re all human here.  Everybody has bad days and good days.  Everybody makes mistakes.  Nobody’s perfect.

But I think it’s how we deal with those good days and bad days that makes us stand out.

Some people are grumpy all the time.  Some people put on a smile all the time.

Some people are fake.  Some people are real.  Some people cry.  Some people get angry.

Some people turn to alcohol.  Some people turn to their friends.  Some people try to buy love.  Some people turn to sex.  Some people hide in their own little world.  Some people share it with the whole world.  Some people get aggressive.  Some people turn to god.  Some people turn to God.

Hmm… does that make any sense at all?!?!?

Sorry if I offended you, but I’m just thinking out loud here…

Don't quote me on it

What’s your favourite quote?

I don’t know if I can pick just one.  If I had to, I think it would be:

Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever.

Oh boy.  I do love quotes!

Podium Cafe is having a vote for the Rider Quote of the Year!

Here are some of my favourites:

“But at the end of the day, it’s only the Tour de France.” – Bradley Wiggins

“Second place is the first loser.” -Heinrich Haussler, after MSR

“Who said that?  Internet forum people?” – Mark Cavendish, after his stage 11 win in the tour in response to “Plenty of people said it wouldn’t suit you, this uphill finish

“More is better!  More coffee is better, more stages are better, more wins are better, more money is better.  There you go.  More is better!” – Jens Voigt

“I looked behind and I saw bloody Cavendish coming, really fast.” – Heinrich Haussler, MSR

“It looks like talking, but it’s actually only words that come out.” – Andy Schleck, asked what he and Frank were talking about on Mt. Ventoux

“You have to earn your place at the front on the climbs… They don’t really want you there if they don’t think you deserve to be there.  No one wants to be on your wheel you go pop because it means more work for them.” – Bradley Wiggins

“Every time someone gets dropped you think ‘well I lasted longer than him.’  It’s like a ramp test or the beep test.  You don’t think you can possibley last any longer, but you . And every time someone drops out, you get a buzz out of it.” – Bradley Wiggins

Good stuff.

Here are a few more of my favourites:

“Everyone has the will to win.  It’s the will to work that makes winners.” – Joe Friel

“Pressure makes diamonds… it’s party of the game.” – Allen Lim

“If a normal person this pain in their legs, they go to the hospital.”

There you have it.

What’s your favourite quote?

Pay that man his money

This title comes from one of my all-time favourite movies!  Enjoy:

But this is the real point of this post:

It’s really interesting to consider, especially given the profession I am currently pursuing and those of some of my close friends.

As I was thinking about it the other day, I want to help people with the knowledge I have.  I want to teach people about cycling and bikes.  I want to teach people about how to train.  I want to teach people about cyclocross and racing.  I want to help people!

However, in order to function in this society, I need some sort of monetary reparation for the services I provide.  So there I am torn.  I want to help people and pass on the things I have experienced and learned, I want to give the knowledge I have another good home.  But I also need to live in this world.

So what do I do?

I’m not perfect.  I certainly don’t know everything.  But I do have experience.  I do have knowledge.  I do have training.

Just enough

As I contemplate my life, I wonder what the last 23.5 years have been all about…

I heard a great phrase reducing the infamous VO2max score to only one factor determining endurance potential.

The ticket to the party only gets you in the door.

On that note, here are my conclusions:

I’ve always done just enough to keep the dream alive. I haven’t broken the barriers, pushed the limits, screwed the screw too tight enough to:

a) make the dream reality, or

b) kill the dream and realize it wasn’t meant to be

Every kid wants to win the Olympics or play in the NHL.  But not every kid does or can.  So what is the separation?

I don’t know.

But I think my goal in the next year is to figure that out…

Here, I leave you with some wisdom from Simon Whitfield.
