Catching Up

Tonight my mom asks, “What are you doing tonight?”

“Catching up on life!”

My life in the last couple weeks has been:

Wake up, eat, ride, eat, work, eat, sleep, eat, repeat.  Plus a little extra craziness here and there.

So tonight I started to catch up on emails, cleaning, cooking, and obviously blogging.

But life is good.  Training is good.  Bowness this weekend!!

I WANT YOU!!!

n608405140_706834_5979Cycling has given me many humbling experiences over time.  I have learned to ask for the world, remove my expectations, and gratefully accept what is given to me.  I don’t feel like I deserve anything and I don’t like having to ask for money, but at this point it’s the only way I can really turn my dreams into a reality.  So here I am, humbly asking for your support.  There are many ways that I feel I can help you in making your dreams a reality while you help me make my dreams a reality.  I would love to sit down a discuss those options with you and make everything happen.  Please contact me if you are interested!  Thanks!

Thinking…

How come I can think up so many great things and have so many great ideas while I’m riding, but I can’t remember or bring them to fruition after?!?!?

But I do love riding!!  And thinking!!

It’s pretty cool.

But I do wish I could remember these things I think up.

If I didn't ride, what else would I do today?

Good call Julian!

That’s kind of what I was thinking when I was riding on Saturday.  I was just rolling along, having a blast!  I love riding my bike!

Now if only I can figure out how to do it all day, every day and still function in society, it would be all good!!

Back at it

IMG_6866I had a good rest week after Fitchburg last week.  I didn’t touch my bike for a whole 8 days!

And wow!  Did I feel like crap when I got back on on Tuesday?!?!?  It was like I hadn’t ridden a bike before.

But things got better!  I got my new sunglasses!!

I’ve put in a couple good workouts.  I’m hurtin’.  But it’s good!  I’m just glad to be back on the bike!  I feel so much better!

Happy to be back!

No luck out here

Nope, there certainly has not been any luck coming our way here in Fitchburg.

I was still feeling pretty good going into Saturday’s road race.  I was covering the early attacks with Roy.  So I worked pretty hard for the first bit of the race, but nothing was sticking.  Eventually Jim got himself into a break.  Over the climb, through the finish, I thought I was to going to get popped so many times.  But once I recovered from my earlier efforts, I was good.

And then going up one of the steep sections on the second lap, I was shifting into my small and dropped my chain.  I tried shifting it back on, but it wasn’t going, so I had to jump off and fix it.  I jammed as hard as I could to close the gap right away, but it wasn’t happening.  I rode right behind the field all the way through the descent and even made it up to the commissaire car, but he was driving all over the road and wouldn’t let me get in his draft for 2 seconds.  After the descent, I was done.  I wasn’t going to be able to close the gap.

Settle in Shaun, this is going to be a looooonng day!  A few people caught me on the next lap and we rode well together.  I almost quit about 5 times that day though…

After Jim had soaked up a bunch of sprint points, he got hit by a car!  What the heck?!?!?  No luck at all!

Our last hope was the crit.  We were going to try and set up Roy for the sprint.  I felt like garbage and I wasn’t even sure if I was going to be able to ride.  The first lap was rough, but then I settled in and started to feel good.  Unfortunately, we didn’t quite get it right in the end.

Despite the lack of results and all the bad luck, it was a great experience and great week!  Thanks everybody for everything!  Thanks to Adam and Dave for the contacts, Dave for the accommodation, everybody for the driving, the support, and just taking me in like I’ve been here all along!  Thanks Dave, Landen (and parents), Roy (and Karen), Peter, Peter, Jim, and Alex!  THANKS!

Until next time…

Again? Really?

Dave and I drove out to Fitchburg yesterday without any problems.  The weather was really hit-and-miss with low temperatures and spotty rain.  It held out with just some fog and high humidity sticking around for our time trials.

I was feeling pretty good, even though I wasn’t able to bring out my TT bike.  I put in a pretty good ride to finish 19th.  Made me really wish I could’ve packed another bike.

As I was slowly meeting all my new teammates we went out for Dinner, came home, got everything ready for the circuit race today and went to bed.

The weather had improved drastically and was now sunny and hot (by my standards at least).  The course looked pretty cool and I was feeling ready to go.

We started and everything was going to plan.  I was staying near the front, making the splits.  The NEBC boys were riding great!  But the field was strung out going through the chicanes and I smoked a pothole, lots the bars, and went down.  CRAP!  I was able to get back up and get back on the bike, but I wasn’t able to chase back on.  I crashed again?  Really?  I managed to hit all the same spots as I did in Pigeon Lake!  Am I the new Aaron Schooler or what?!?!?  Just kidding man.

Everybody else rode well all day.  But I lost significant time on GC.  I got cleaned up at the first aid trailer and everybody took really good care of me.  Thanks guys!  Sorry!

But tomorrow is another day and we will be out in full force!

The East Coast

Having only spent 2 minutes driving away from the airport in Boston, I could tell this place was different!

It’s cool.  It’s really a city.  There are people everywhere.  There are cool shops everywhere.  Interesting buildings, changing scenery, winding roads.  I’m certainly not in Alberta!

That being said, I’m not sure I would really want to live in a place like this.  I’m comfortable in Edmonton.  Maybe I need to expand my horizons and leave my comfort zone.

I like the idea of being able to walk to get lots of things.

I don’t know if I really put 2 and 2 together to realize that MIT, Harvard, BU, and so many other schools are right here!  It’s only a 3 hour drive to NYC.  Everything is so close.

Then I looked at a map.  I never really looked closely at the geography around here.

I’ve been to Europe.  I’ve been to Quebec.  But I still expect everywhere to look like the prairies for some reason.  This area really reminds me of those different lifestyles and cultures.

Get it done.  Don’t worry about it.  Don’t complain.  It’s what you do.  Just do it.

Here I am!

I got everything packed up pretty easily on Monday night for my early Tuesday departure.  Thanks Cory for the aerobars at the last minute.

My mom and I woke up at 3:30 and rolled out of bed and headed to the airport.  That is EARLY!  No problems getting everything on, no travel troubles, everything arrived quickly, found Dave Chiu no problem.  Everything is rolling smoothly.

So now I’m hanging out at Dave’s place in Brookline (not quite Boston) in anticipation of my first shot at Fitchburg-Longsjo.  I’m pretty excited.  New races.  New people.  New places.

We rode the TT course last night with Peter Bradshaw (whom I immediately recognized from his Belgian travels this spring on Embrocation).  Cool.  14km rolling through the trees, over a causeway, suffering the whole way!

I had a solid 10 hour sleep last night!  Then Adam treated me to a delicious breakfast at his favourite spot.  If I had that place outside my front door I would weigh 100 kilos!  It was excellent and even followed up by “the best coffee in Boston!”

Right now, it’s raining.  I’m pretty much waiting to go for a ride and see what the rest of the plan is.  Fun times!
