BK Memorial Cross

I had a much better day today than last week.  I was a little worried still about how my stomach and back would act.  But Keith had put together an amazing course.  It was really hard and technical.  But in the good way.  Thanks Keith and Synergy.

I was pretty rarin’ to go, but not quite as much as the week before.  Aaron and I had some good conversation on the way.  Just got me excited about good things.

Based on my crappy performance from last week, I had a second row start.  Been a while since I’ve had one of those in a race I can actually be competitive.  It wasn’t bad though, and I jumped into the top 5 pretty quick and pretty comfortably.  Tim was back to his on-fire self and got a pretty good gap pretty early.  I was trying to hang onto the second group, basically composed of Bunnin, Aaron, Mike, and Dave.  Mike dropped his chain and I passed him for a bit.  I thought I was making serious time on Dave for a while, but then he turned his jets back on.

Then I was being seriously chased by Ryan, Brian, and Chris.  We traded spots a few times, but with 2 to go I was really gunning to close the gap.  My dad had also told me that Mike was slowing.  Unfortunately I came into the stairs a little too hot and went down.  Not bad, but when I got to the top my chain had come off.  And then I just didn’t quite have it to catch Chris and Brian.  Oh well, 8th is still a huge improvement on last week.  And the real racing is still to come!

Juventus in one week!

Provincials in two weeks!

NATIONALS IN THREE WEEKS!!!!!!

And congrats to Bettini on another great ride at worlds!

Child-like

Tuesday means Science and Religion with Denis.

That means I probably learned or was forced to think about something interesting…

Here it is:

There are two parts to being a Christian.  The first and most simple is to have a faith like a child.  To just believe.  No questions asked.  Done.

Then you must go into critical analysis of the next level.

What do you think about creation?  What do you think about evolution?  What do you think about evil in a world created by a good God?

Think about these things.  Wrestle with them.  Cry out to God.  Question.

But then come back to the creed.  Come back to what you believe.  Come back to that child-like faith.

Hardcore

Just a quick post about the race.

Obviously I didn’t go great, because other I would have been on here sharing my joy right away!

I got nothing.

No excuses.

No joy.

Nothing!

I was super amped before the start!  And I had a good start.  But Chris gave me some fast-start competition and I didn’t see the front a whole lot!  I did manage to hang out in the top 5 or so quite comfortably for the first 4 or so laps.  It was awesome coming down the fast descent with the sweeping left watching 4 guys in front of all riding it smooth, tight, and fast though.  The front group was huge!  Pretty much all day long too!  You could be as fast as winner and finish 8th!  Wow!

But after about 20 minutes.  I collapsed.  Then I pulled the plug with 3 to go and ran straight to the bathroom to suffer the rest of the night with stomach and back pain!  But I have no excuse as to why I got dropped… bang… on the fourth lap.

Dave pulled through huge for Juventus with a “solo” win.  On a broken chain.  Way to be buddy!

But it is true, I am holding out for a slightly more technical/selective course.  (Hopefully I’m not speaking to soon and creating for myself another nationals or worlds course…)

U-Pass

So the UofA instituted this thing called the U-Pass this year.  In your tuition is a $70 fee for a school-year-long bus pass sticker to put on your one card.

First I am going to qualify that I didn’t know much at all about the process of this coming out and I was not involved in any way.

But I am slightly frustrated at the fact that I have to pay $70 for some kid to take the bus.  I mean, if somebody couldn’t afford a bus pass and had to take the bus in from St. Albert every day, I’ll buy him one.  But I don’t want to have to pay without me volunteering the money.

I understand the point, to save poor students money (why can’t you just decrease tuition then, but that’s a whole other can of worms!).  And to encourage people to take the bus rather than drive.  I’m all for that and saving the environment.

But why not ride your bike?  Or encourage students to ride their bikes to school?  It’s even better for the environment and good exercise.  And hey, if you can’t afford a bike to ride to school, I’d be more than happy to buy you one!  Hands down, no questions asked!

Just my thoughts on $70 that was thrown down the drain on my end.

Are you comfortable with your body?

I hope so. I don’t think anybody should feel shame in the way they look. I also don’t think anybody should take shame in wanting to look good. Just don’t be obsessed with it. But that’s not my point…

I am comfortable with my body, I have no problem going into the changeroom and showering with other men, I have no problem stripping down to put my bike clothes on.

But what the heck is with all the guys who walk around the changeroom. Completely naked. Or sit in the sauna. Completely naked. Or stand at the sink and shave. Completely naked!

I am glad you are comfortable with your body, but for everybody else’s sake, please, just use a towel at least.
